Familiar Faces Solution

Page history last edited by PBworks 18 years, 3 months ago

If you look at which shapes appear on which numbers, some interesting patterns emerge. For instance, the hexagon appears on pumpkins 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, 28, and 30. The square and star always appear together, and they only appear on pumpkins 6, 7, 16, 17, 26, and 27.

You may have noticed that the numbers in the information for this puzzle were spelled out. Apart from the circle, which is a default "placeholder" shape, each shape is an indicator of whether or not the letter it begins with appears in the spelled-out name of each number. For example, the hexagon is an indicator of the presence of the letter H, and so it appears on tHree and eigHt. The star and square are both indicators of the presence of the letter S, and so forth. Blank pumpkin number thirty-one should have a triangle, a hexagon, and an oval and an octagon (since every other number with "o" has those two.) Anagram the first letters of those shapes to get HOOT.

It was a total coincidence that we ended up with 31 pumpkins in a Halloween-themed puzzle, and we were amazingly lucky that HOOT fit into our metapuzzle, because it's one of the very, very few words that can be clued with this mechanism.
